The Formation Year

Keep your books. Give the formation its own year.

You chose what your children learn from, and it is working. The Formation Year is for the part you began homeschooling for: the saints, the feast days, the conversation at the table. It gives that part its own place in your week, beside whatever you already teach from. One household, every child, ages 5 to 18.

Free for seven days. Your card is charged on day eight. Leave in one click before then and you owe nothing.

Who it is for

The books are chosen. The formation gets what is left of the evening.

“We'll do the feast day when there's time.” Picture a family who says it every month, and means it. Their mornings go well. The math is working and the reading is in hand. And the reason they began homeschooling, their children's formation as Catholics, waits. A feast day goes by at the table without a word. A saint's name is on the wall and nobody has told her story. When it does get done, it is done by hand: the story found that night, the readings looked up, the questions made up at the table.

It is not neglect. It is a full day, and the part that matters most is the part that waits. If that is your house, what you would least like is for the children to be taught well and never told the stories you began this to tell.

A program of subjects teaches the subjects. The saints, the Catholic calendar and the conversation at the table are a second work, and in a full day it is the one that waits. The Formation Year gives that second work its own place in the week. You stay the one who forms your children. LUMEN carries the material and the calendar.

Picture the same table on the next feast day. You read the saint's story, already written out in the Saints' Journey. The readings for the day are set. The saint asks the first question, and the quiet child answers it. You send them off to dinner with one thing to carry.

Not for a family that wants LUMEN to teach Reading, Writing, Mathematics or Debate & History. That is the Family Year, and its price is on the pricing page. Nor for a family that wants formation taken off its hands: the domestic church comes first. We support it; we do not replace it.

Plainly

What is in the year, and what is not.

In the Formation Year

  • The Saints' Journey. The Catholic year as seven Pillars, each with its saints, its feasts and its readings, set for each child's age.
  • The eighteen saints and the Saints' Room. One table, one microphone, the whole family. The saint asks questions rather than giving answers, draws out the quiet child, and closes with one thing to carry to dinner.
  • Bosco, the home guide, by chat or by voice, at any hour.
  • The family record. Each child's badges, a chart of the points you log, and a row for every lesson you log.
  • The whole quest library. Dozens of real-world projects, spread across the year's seven sessions.
  • A 30-minute set-up call with our voice assistant in your first week. It knows which year you chose.

Not in it

  • Teaching in the four subjects. No voice teachers for Reading, Writing, Mathematics or Debate & History, no pages made for your child, no placement. You teach from your own books.
  • Teachers awarding the points. You log what was done, Mom or Dad, a minute or two after each lesson. A new badge is claimed by the family and confirmed by you.
  • The evening recap and the Friday report. Nothing arrives to say what the day held. A safeguarding note still does, as the next paragraph says.
  • The quest builder and other families' quests. The whole library is yours. Building a quest with Bosco, and borrowing another family's, belong to the Family Year.

What does not change on any plan. Your children's talks with Bosco and at the Saints' Room table are watched for safety the same way. When a note is written, it reaches you the same evening. On most evenings you will hear nothing from us. When a note arrives it says what was noticed and at what level; most are mild, and a mild note is not an alarm.

A week in the Formation Year

You teach. You log. LUMEN brings the rest.

  1. You teach as you do now. The same books, the same co-op, the same mornings. LUMEN does not ask what you teach from.
  2. You log it. A minute or two after each lesson, Mom or Dad presses Log Progress and says what was done. That is a screen, and it is the parent's. It is the whole of the record-keeping you add, a minute or two, in place of the evening hunt for a story and a set of questions.
  3. LUMEN brings the rest. The saints of the season, a quest for the session, Bosco at ten at night when a question will not wait, and the badges filling as the record grows.

A year on, the family record holds every lesson you logged, every badge your children claimed and the quests they worked through across the seven sessions.

Questions

What families ask before they begin.

What is the Formation Year?

A year of LUMEN for the family that teaches Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Debate & History from its own books. It holds the Saints' Journey, the eighteen saints and the Saints' Room, Bosco, the family record with its badges and points, and the whole quest library. It does not teach the four subjects. You do, and you log what was done.

Do I have to change what I teach from?

No. LUMEN does not ask what you teach from. You log the work under the four subjects, and the record is built from what you log.

Who logs the points, and how long does it take?

Mom or Dad, a minute or two after each lesson. A child can send what she did, and you approve it.

Can my children use the voice teachers?

Not for the four subjects. Bosco is open by chat and by voice, and the Saints' Room by voice, at the table. The four subject teachers belong to the Family Year.

Can I move to the Family Year later?

Any day, from inside the family record. You will see what it does before you say yes. An upgrade is paid in full.

On a paid yearYou pay the Family Year today, less the part of your Formation Year you have not used; your new year starts today.

In your free weekYou are in your free week, so nothing is charged today. When it ends, the Family Year is charged in place of the Formation Year.

Every row, badge and quest you have logged stays yours. The Family Year, and what it costs, is on the pricing page.

How do I leave?

In one click, before day eight, and you owe nothing. After that, you can end the membership from the cancel page (signed in as Mom or Dad), and it ends on the last day of the year you paid for. Or write to concierge@lumenfamilyacademy.com and we will do it for you, with no retention script.

You keep the books and the feast days. We carry the material, the calendar and the record.
